High School Experience

When I was in high school I took part in a class called "Early Childhood Occupations." For this class we ran our own preschool for half a semester and went out to other schools to assist in classrooms. For my classroom experience I went to a Special Education School in our district. There I assisted in a classroom of high school age students with varying disabilities. This was the first time I had worked with students with any disability besides Down Syndrome. My jobs varied from day to day. I supervised their chores, participated in gym, even just played educational games. I loved every minute I spent with those students, and I formed bonds with each of them. This is when I realized I needed to change my major to Special Education because I knew I'd be good at it.

What I hope to gain from this summer...

This summer I will be working as a camp counselor and party attendant. I will be working with and around children everyday. I hope this will be a good experience and will help me with my future classes. I have already talked to my boss about next summer. I'm trying to get into a program called Special Camp. Its a summer camp for children with disabilities. I think that camp will be more helpful for my future. I want to get as much experience as possible because I feel that you can always learn something new. So I hope that between this summer and next summer I will have a good amount of experience.

Welcome!

My name is Kelsey Renner. I am a freshman at Western Illinois University. My major is Special Education. I'm am currently in the program here at Western for a dual certificate in Elementary Education. I initially applied to Western Illinois as a Kinesiology major, I wanted to be a Physical Education Teacher. I took a class my senior year in high school that we worked in a Special Education School. I loved it!! That is when I realized Special Education was what field I wanted to teach. No question in my mind!  I have a family member with Down Syndrome, which was my first experience with a person with disabilities. There is no doubt in my mind that I will be a good teacher. I can't wait!
